- The Importance of New Patient Examinations: Why You Need One
When registering with our practice we advise a new patient examination with one of our trusted dentists where they will carry out a full examination on your teeth and gums. This includes 2 x-rays and a bespoke treatment plan. You will be expected to be with us for around 45 - 60 minutes which allow plenty of time to discuss your treatment plan and any concerns you may have. Patients who have not had a dental check up with us in over 2 years will also require a new patient examination as your teeth and gums can change in this period of time. What does a dentist do during an examination? Understand any concerns you may have Carefully check for any general health conditions that could impact your oral health Discuss past dental treatment experiences to ensure we can keep you comfortable at all times Discuss your current oral hygiene routines and see if they can help improve this in any way Examine around the outside of your mouth first to check your jaw joint, neck glands, salivary glands and for any abnormalities of the facial skin Examine inside the mouth to check for lumps, bumps and patches in your 'soft tissues' (our Oral Cancer Screening) Thoroughly assess your teeth, including any existing dental restorations, for any signs of decay, tooth wear or deficiencies Screen your gums for any sign of gum disease Take any x-rays as required (2 are included in the price of your examination, if needed) Carry out any special tests upon any teeth if required, should there be any other concerns Your dentist will then discuss your treatment plan in detail with you depending on their findings.

- When is the right time to schedule your child's first dental visit?
Taking your child to the dentist at the right time is crucial for their long-term oral health. Experts recommend scheduling their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting—whichever comes first. Early visits not only help monitor the development of their teeth and gums but also establish a positive relationship with dental care from a young age. Regular check-ups help prevent cavities, detect potential issues early, and provide guidance on proper oral hygiene habits. By starting early, you ensure your child’s smile stays healthy and bright for years to come! How Can Kids Keep Their Teeth Clean? Establishing good oral hygiene habits early is essential for lifelong dental health. Even before your baby’s first tooth appears, gently wiping their gums with a clean, damp washcloth after feedings helps prevent bacteria buildup. As teeth emerge, assist children under 3 by brushing twice daily with a soft toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. For those 3 and older , use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and teach them to spit it out, introducing flossing when teeth start touching. By 10 years old , most kids can brush and floss independently, but parental reminders to brush for 2 minutes twice a day and floss daily help reinforce these habits, ensuring healthy, happy smiles.
