Periodontal Therapy Book a Consultation Periodontal therapy involves the treatment of bleeding gums or loose teeth as a result of gum disease. Periodontal disease Gum (periodontal) disease is a serious bacterial infection that destroys the attachment fibres and supporting bone that hold your teeth firmly in place. Left untreated it can affect the stability of your teeth and even result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease is usually pain free; you may not know you have it until diagnosed by your dentist or dental hygienist, which is why regular check-ups are important. Early signs to look out for include: bleeding gums; red, swollen gums; gum discomfort; spaces appearing between your teeth; loose teeth; receding gums; persistent bad breath; teeth sensitivity. The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, which can be prevented or reversed by cleaning your teeth well at home and having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontal disease that can spread to the underlying tissue and bone, causing teeth to become unstable or even fall out. Periodontal consultation and treatment At your first periodontal consultation, Manoj will make a thorough assessment of your teeth and gums and review your medical history. He will assess for signs of periodontal disease, determine any gum problems or issues with unstable teeth. He will work with your dental hygienist to show you how to look after your teeth and gums, and use specialist techniques to eliminate any infection around the teeth and under the gums. In advanced cases, surgical treatment may be needed to access deeper infection, and special advanced regenerative techniques may be used to grow back lost bone. Delicate plastic surgery techniques can be used for gum recession or overgrowth issues. The aim of periodontal treatment is to promote repair and healing of the gums and bone and help minimise the progression and recurrence of the disease. Children are very much welcome here at Sapphire Dental! We see children from as little at 6 months with their first baby tooth, and often it is all about acclimatising them to the dental clinic environment. Children's Appointments Many of our patients ask when their child can have their first check-up at the dentist. The answer is there is in fact no age restriction on taking your child to the dentist. Mostly, when a child's first tooth comes through the gum, usually at the age of 6 months, it's a great time to book their first trip to the dentist. At Sapphire Dental we also have our children's corner where many of our younger patients enjoy colouring, building tower blocks and also knocking on our Tooth Fairy's door! It is important to maintain children's oral hygiene in order to prevent tooth decay, which is the primary reason that children have a general anaesthetic. We recommend parents to help children brush their teeth until at least the age of 7, and certainly until they have developed the dexterity to manoeuvre a toothbrush around their mouth effectively. Children's appointments are never rushed and we work with the parent to create a friendly environment so they can enjoy their visit to the dentist and leave with lots of positive experiences. I enjoyed treating periodontal cases whilst at university, and continue to do so in my working career. I also enjoy teaching patients new ways of looking after their mouths, tailoring everything to help them find what works for them.
